Arsenal are set to hand the Gunners captaincy to young midfielder Jack Wilshere according to the Sunday Mirror.

Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen was given the duty of leading the North London side into battle after Robin Van Persie left to join Man United but the former Ajax man hasn’t taken all that well to the job and some have remarked that his displays since being made skipper have been patchy and this could be down to the extra responsibility the 27 year old has been given.

Wilshere looks set to take over in the role next term and will be the same age as Cesc Fabregas when the Spaniard filled the role.

The 21 year old England man recently signed a new five year contract and is very much seen as the future of the club and many supporters will be glad to see the tigerish competitor handed the captain’s armband as they may well see the heart felt displays from the young midfielder as being in keeping with the role of a skipper.

Wilshere has notched up 89 appearances for Arsenal since making his debut in September 2008 at just 16 years of age.
