Manchester United striker Federico Macheda is open to the possibility of a return to former club Lazio according to Sky Sports.

The Italian striker came through the ranks at Lazio’s academy before joining the Old Trafford side in 2007.

After a promising start, the player has struggled to make an impact on the United first team.

Macheda is currently plying his trade out on loan at Bundesliga side Stuttgart.

While the player is still young at just 21 years old, it is thought the Italian is keen to play first team football and that may see him headed for the exit door come the summer.

It is thought unlikely that Macheda would find himself ahead of the likes of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Chicharito Hernandez in the United pecking order were he to return to Old Trafford.

The player was presented with the possibility of a return to Lazio after he played against his former club for Stuttgart in the Europa League.

‘I want to grow as a player and play with continuity to prove my worth’, Macheda told lalaziosiamonoi.it after the tie.

‘I would go back, if there was a possibility in the future.’
