Old Trafford side keen on Benfica centre-back.

Man United hope to agree a deal to sign Argentine centre-back Ezequiel Garay within a matter of weeks according to respected Portuguese source OJogo.

The Old Trafford side have been scouting the Benfica defender for some months now and given the defensive issues Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have experienced this season it is perhaps unsurprising that the Premier League table toppers would look to strengthen their back-line.

Sir Alex Ferguson has sent his brother Martin to scout the former Real Madrid man in recent weeks and has filed glowing reports about the 26 year old’s form, form that has helped Lisbon side Benfica to lead the Primeira Liga and go the entire season thus far unbeaten.

With Rio Ferdinand clearly nearing the end of his glittering career one can assume that interest in Garay may be with a view to finding a long term replacement for the 34 year old, who is still to sign a new contract and is due to see his current deal come to a close this summer.

Ferguson’s defence struggled somewhat in the earlier part of the season and given the skipper Nemanja Vidic has had his fair share of injury concerns it does make sense to consider options to beef up the Man United back-line.

Benfica’s defence with Garay at the centre of it, has conceded just 14 goals in 22 league games this term.
