Manchester United target Nemanja Matic will not come cheaply.

Manchester United may have to pay a staggering £45million to Benfica for Nemanja Matic, according to talkSPORT.

The former Chelsea midfielder moved to Portugal as part of the deal that saw David Luiz arrive at Stamford Bridge. But despite failing to make the grade in his first spell in England, he is thought to be one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s prime targets in this summer’s transfer window.

United have set their sights high, with Borussia Dortmund hitman Robert Lewandowski also on their list, and it seems they will surely have to sell some players before spending big on the likes of Matic.

However, this could work out nicely for United, who will look to offload ineffectual midfielders such as Anderson, Nani and Ashley Young, for whom Matic would be an ideal replacement.

The Serbian is a skillful and creative midfielder, and even at £45million would be a sound investment as Ferguson looks for a long-term replacement for Paul Scholes. However, Benfica will be hoping that their high asking price scares off any potential buyers, as they are keen to build a team around the 24-year-old.

United attempted to fix their midfield problem with the signing of Shinji Kagawa last summer, though the Japanese midfielder has not hit his best form so far at Old Trafford.
