Bayer Leverkusen are stepping up their interest in highly rated Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, according to the Daily Express.

The 25-year-old Argentinian has been a long-term target for Manchester United over the last few years after some fine displays for Benfica, and they were widely tipped to move for him this summer to solve their midfield problems.

Gaitain’s versatility would prove very useful to new United manager David Moyes, who will lose the legendary Paul Scholes to retirement, while the likes of Nani and Ashley Young have been off-form for the Red Devils this season.

The Benfica star would cost around £25million, and could play a central or wide role in United’s midfield. However, Bayer Leverkusen are keen to strengthen their squad this summer as they look set for a 3rd placed finish in the Bundesliga, and Champions League football next season. Gaitan would also be the ideal replacement for star player Andre Schurrle, who is reportedly close to agreeing a move to Chelsea.

Gaitan could be tempted by a move away from Benfica, who were beaten finalists in the Europa League this season, as he seeks a new challenge in his career.

Leverkusen could step ahead of United in the chase for Gaitan, as Moyes may have a number of other targets as he looks to put his stamp on his new team.
