Napoli are the latest club to be showing an interest in Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to talkSPORT.

The 27-year-old has had a difficult season at the Emirates Stadium, suffering a surprising but significant dip in form since being made captain by Arsene Wenger.

The Belgian centre-back had been a solid and reliable player for the Gunners prior to this season, and seemed the logical replacement as skipper when Robin van Persie left the club for Manchester United last summer.

However, the former Ajax man did not respond well to the captaincy, and found himself dropped for much of the latter half of the season, leading to speculation that he could be sold in the summer.

He is still a highly rated talent, and the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona have shown an interest in him, though Napoli are now believed to be leading the race for his signature as they look to strengthen their squad for Champions League football next season.

The Serie A runners-up face the very real prospect of losing star striker Edinson Cavani, and have been linked with several big names as they look to bring in a large transfer fee for the in-demand Uruguayan.
