Barcelona have reportedly launched a €27m (£23m) bid for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen according to Het Laatste Nieuws.

The Nou Camp side have been strongly linked with interest in a number of potential central defensive signings with the likes of Daniel Agger, Thiago Silva and David Luiz all said to be on the Nou Camp side’s radar.

Incoming boss Gerardo Martino has just two effective senior options at centre-back, Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol, and last term had to call upon Javier Mascherano and Alex Song as makeshift options on occasions when either of this first choice pair was unavailable.

Vertonghen had an excellent first season in the English top tier, making 48 starts in all competitions, but could perhaps be tempted by a move to join the La Liga title holders.

Tottenham paid Ajax £12m for the Belgian last July and Andre Villas-Boas would not be looking to lose arguably his most effective defensive weapon, Vertonghen showing his adaptability expertly last term filling in at left-back when necessary and being a rock solid centre-back for much of the last campaign.

Clearly if the North London side were to sell Gareth Bale to Real Madrid then Vertonghen may question the long term ambitions of the White Hart Lane club and this could perhaps be a factor in whether the battling defender would consider pushing for a summer move himself.
