Liverpool are hoping to be able to persuade Chelsea to loan them midfield player Juan Mata this season, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The future of the highly rated Spain international has been in doubt of late after the west London club recently bought occasional Brazil international Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala for £32 million to play in Mata’s position out wide at Stamford Bridge this season.

And with the 25-year-old having barely been used by the Blues so far this season following the return of Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho to the capital, speculation has been rife that Mata could be on his way out of the club before the summer transfer window closes for business for the year on Sept 2.

So far, both London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with possible big-money moves for the exciting winger, despite his club’s insistence that the Spaniard is not for sale at any price this summer.

However, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers enjoying a close relationship with the ‘Special One’ having worked under Mourinho during his previous spell in charge of the club, the Northern Irishman is said to be hopeful of being able to pull off an audacious season-long loan move for Mata before the window closes at midnight on Monday.
