Red Devils missed out on Spain youngster in the summer window.
Premier League champions Manchester United will return in January to sign Athletic Bilbao midfield player Ander Herrera, according to reports in the Daily Mail.
The Red Devils had a disappointing final day of the summer transfer window, only managing to land Everton midfield player Marouane Fellaini in a deal worth a whopping £27.5 m.
According to some accounts, United head coach David Moyes also made last-minute efforts to bring Herrera to Old Trafford before the window slammed shut on Monday, although the Scot has since claimed that he did not try and sign the Spain Under-23 international in those crazy last few hours on transfer deadline day.
United did lodge a bid valued at £26m for the highly-rated 24-year-old last week that Bilbao rejected out of hand, but it is believed that Moyes did not want to meet the value of the release clause in Herrera’s contract with the Liga outfit, which was estimated at £30.5m, hence why the transfer never went through.
But United will now keep close tabs on the Spaniard’s form for the Basques between now and when the January window reopens again at the turn of the year, before deciding whether or not to return to Bilbao and sign Herrera.
