Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a move for in-demand Southampton defender Luke Shaw when the winter transfer window opens again for business at the turn of the year, according to reports in the Sunday Mirror.

The coveted young England Under-21 international has been closely tracked by a number of big-name Premier League clubs for the past 12 months now, with the likes of top-flight champions Manchester United and Uefa Europa League winners Chelsea both known to be interested in signing Shaw in the new year.

However, it now appears as though the north London club are also keen to land the 18-year-old in January, with the left-back position a current problem area at White Hart Lane for Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas,  so much so that the Portuguese has even been forced to play centre-back Jan Vertonghen out of position in that role of late.

But it is understood that Spurs director of football Franco Baldini has now earmarked Shaw for the job in the capital going forward, with the club said to be preparing a move for the £20 million-rated Englishman, who has a contract at St Mary’s that runs until June 2018, at the turn of the year.
