CaughtOffside understands that following extensive talks between the two clubs last month representatives of the North London side have continued to meet with their Bundesliga counterparts in a move to secure a deal to bring in the German youngster in the summer.

The two clubs have apparently reached a tacit agreement on a €45m (£37m) deal and barring the possibility that another side may register their interest in Draxler it would appear that Arsene Wenger has a deal in place to sign the goal-scoring midfielder.

Schalke are adamant that they will not sell Draxler to a domestic rival, with both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund said to be keen on the playmaker, and would prefer to see a deal completed before the World Cup so as to give them time to use the funds from the sale wisely on a replacement.

Draxler has returned from time out with an ankle injury to make a late appearance against Mainz over the weekend and will hope to be fully fit to start Schalke’s Champions League encounter with Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Wenger will look to secure personal terms with Draxler in the coming months and the motivating factor of teaming up with German national team colleagues Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski could well aid a move to complete the deal.

Despite his tender years Draxler has already racked up nearly 150 club appearances for Schalke and has ten national team caps to his name.
