The Croatian international has been one of the stand put performers for the Saints this term following an £8.5m move from French giants Lyon last summer, and now United will give the south coast side a chance to turn a quick profit.
Sources close to the Old Trafford club have suggested that David Moyes had asked the club to take a closer look at Lovren earlier on in the campaign and he has been suitably impressed by what he has seen and will take the plunge with a £15m offer at the end of the season.
United are on the look out for new defensive options as veteran Serb Nemanja Vidic is off to join Inter Milan in the summer, while there are still question marks over Rio Ferdinand’s future as he has not yet been offered an extension of his deal that runs out in June.
Southampton have always maintained that they won’t sell their best players, but cashing in on Lovren would free up funds and mean they stand more of a chance of being able to fend off big bids for English stars Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Jay Rodriguez.
