Manchester United could be set to give up on signing Southampton’s Luke Shaw and move instead for Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba, according to Fichajes.net.
The Red Devils are known to be in the market for a new signing in that position despite the decision for Patrice Evra to remain at Old Trafford for another year, and it has long been thought that Saints youngster Shaw would be brought in for a big-money deal this summer.
However, talks appear to have stalled with Southampton over the transfer, and with United growing increasingly frustrated at the time taken to seal the deal, Alba could now be in the sights of new manager Louis van Gaal.
The Spaniard has established himself as one of the finest left-backs in Europe over the last few years, and first caught United’s eye while still at previous club Valencia, though he eventually made the move to the Nou Camp instead.
Alba’s form dipped somewhat this season, and it could be that the Catalan giants are ready to listen to offers for the 25-year-old as they consider a major revamp of their squad following a highly disappointing trophyless campaign under previous manager Gerardo Martino.
Other big names are already reported to be in the firing line, including Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez, another player recently linked with a move to United.
