The Premier League club has reached an agreement ‘in principle’ over the 26 year old’s personal terms with Man United and Real Madrid confident that a price for the player can soon be agreed.

Though the two sides are fairly far apart in their valuations of the Argentine international talks are to resume next week and it does appear that di Maria could well be set to beef up Louis van Gaal’s wide attacking options.

Real Madrid hope to garner €56m (£44m) from the sale though Man United are ready to offer €37m (£29m) for di Maria, who may well feel the time is right to leave the Bernabeu.

Di Maria has just completed his fourth season at Real Madrid and the arrival last summer of Gareth Bale has certainly led to a more limited role in Carlo Ancelotti’s first team set-up though it is worth noting that the former Benfica man finished 2013/14 as the club’s leading assist maker.

Van Gaal would do well to bring in a quality winger given the average displays put in by the likes of Ashley Young, Nani and Luis Antonio Valencia in recent seasons.

Man United have already spent upwards of £55m to bring in midfielder Ander Hererra and former Southampton full-back Luke Shaw as the club’s owners look to spend big to help improve a squad that could only secure a seventh place Premier League finish last season.
