Experienced midfielder Esteban Cambiasso has rejected an approach from Serie A side Sampdoria, according to Sky Sports, which could leave the door open for a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentinian recently left Inter Milan, the club where he spent the vast majority of an illustrious playing career after signing from Real Madrid in 2004.

Such is his love for the Milanese club that Cambiasso reportedly turned down Sampdoria out of respect for their divisional rivals, reopening the door for Tottenham Hotspur, who have been strongly linked with a swoop for the veteran in the summer transfer window.

Cambiasso’s compatriot Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed as the new manager at White Hart Lane, and the chance to bring in a top quality player without paying a transfer fee may well appeal to the former Southampton boss, who is not expected to have the kind of riches to spend that former manager Andre Villas-Boas did last summer.

Cambiasso would add experience and stability to the Tottenham side, offering two characteristics that Spurs could often have been criticised for lacking over recent seasons.

They are, however, well stocked in central midfield – unless players are moved on, Cambiasso would be competing with Sandro, Paulinho, Moussa Dembele, Etienne Capoue and Nabil Bentaleb for a place in the line-up.
