Sunderland have made one of their first major summer signings, with Gus Poyet’s team agreeing a deal to sign midfielder Jack Rodwell from Manchester City for a fee of £10m on an five year contract.

Rodwell has struggled for first team opportunities since being brought to Eastlands from Everton by Roberto Mancini and will be hoping to rebuild his career at the Stadium of Light after a frustrating couple of years.

Sunderland have endured a frustrating transfer window so far, having struggled to bring in reinforcements and suffering the blow of losing midfielder Jack Colback to fierce rivals Newcastle United on a free transfer, with Rodwell joining as a potential replacement for the youth team product.

Rodwell was initially seen as one of England’s brightest young prospects when he burst onto the first team scene at Goodison Park under the management of David Moyes, but a succession of injuries had forced his career to stall before the surprise move to take him to Eastlands, potentially to boost the club’s home-grown player quota.

He was rarely given the opportunity to impress, however, and struggled to grasp the ones that were handed to him, leading to City allowing him to move on this summer.
