Atletico Madrid are keeping a close eye on former striker Fernando Torres ahead of a potential late summer bid for the Spaniard according to the Metro.

The 30 year old Blues star has failed to come close to justifying the £50m the west London side paid Liverpool for his services and a move away from Stamford Bridge may well be best for all concerned.

Torres fears a season of warming the bench following the arrival of Diego Costa and the return of Didier Drogba and Vicente Calderon boss Diego Simeone could perhaps do with the addition of another striker this summer.

Atletico Madrid lost both Costa dn David Villa but brought in Mario Mandzukic but may feel Torres would add a further threat and a return to his native Spain may be the move that reignites his flagging career.

Torres has managed just 20 goals in 110 Premier League fixtures for Chelsea and has two years to run on his current contract and an exit may depend greatly on just how much owner Roman Abramovich will insist on receiving for the faltering forward.
