Ajax will not allow star player Daley Blind to leave on the cheap, and have told Manchester United that they will have to pay the ‘absolute top price’ to sign their prize asset.

The Guardian reports that Ajax director of football Marc Overmars will play hardball over any potential transfer, as Louis van Gaal weighs up a move the versatile defender, who was part of his Holland squad at the World Cup earlier this summer.

Van Gaal wants at least one central midfielder and a centre-back. Blind is being seriously considered because he can play as a defensive midfielder, central defender or as a wing-back or left-back, but is likely to cost upwards of £20m.

United boss Van Gaal needs reinforcements after a desperate start to the season that has seen his team take just a point from two Barclays Premier League games and crash out of the Capital One Cup 4-0 at League One MK Dons.

Overmars said: “We believe that we currently have a strong team and want Daley to stay for another year. Only if the absolute top price is paid is a transfer negotiable. Daley’s management know how we feel at the moment. Next year we will have a much more lenient policy, we are willing to talk with Daley and we will settle for a reasonable price.

“There’s some rumblings around Daley, some clubs inquired, but there is no concrete offer. And with Manchester United, there is no contact at all.”
