White Hart Lane boss Mauricio Pochettino is apparently hopeful of offloading flop forward Roberto Soldado to Juventus on a season long loan basis which would open the door for a move for Welbeck.

Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal has told the 23 year old marksman that he can leave and want £16m from any prospective suitor.

Tottenham apparently lead local rivals Arsenal in pursuit of Welbeck and Pochettino sees the Man United man as an ideal option to provide support and competition to Emmanuel Adebayor and Harry Kane.

Last term proved Welbeck’s most prolific to date with the England international with the Man United man netting nine Premier League goals in 15 starts before playing a prominent role in Roy Hodgson’s 2014 World Cup set-up.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy forked out £26m for Spaniard Soldado last summer and may well insist that Pochettino looks to bank some funds from sales of members of his expansive squad before forking out for another attacker.
