Manchester United fear that Robin van Persie will never again return to full fitness, as he edged closer to a dreaded knee injury that could rule him out for several months.

According to the Metro, the Dutch striker was penciled in for surgery last season after injuring his left knee ligaments in the 3-0 win over Olympiakos in February.

However, then-Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal persuaded Van Persie to delay the procedure and manage the injury with rest to ensure he was fit for the World Cup in Brazil.

It seems that the now United boss could regret that decision, as he risks losing his star striker from his already ailing team. And with Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck both seemingly edging closer to leaving the club, he could be left with Wayne Rooney has his only first-team centre forward.

According to the source Van Gaal know it’s only a matter of time before they lose Van Persie to the treatment table for an extended period of time.

The news may force United’s hand in the market, as the loss of Van Persie at any point in the season would leave them significantly short of firepower, but time is running out for them to make a move.
