Manchester United look set to secure a loan deal for Colombian forward Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco, with former star Cristiano Ronaldo hailing the potential move as a “fantastic buy”, according to the Mail.

United took the lead in the protracted chase to sign Falcao, after he was offered to Europe’s top clubs by Monaco as they seek to restructure their wage bill, with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City seemingly having stepped back from the chase for the player.

With the Colombian now due to arrive for a medical at the club’s Carrington training ground, the deal looks close to completion, with Ronaldo having praised the move:

“I think he will be a fantastic buy. Manchester have not started well, two points, so they need quality players and Falcao is a quality player.”

The former FC Porto goalscorer is expected to arrive at Old Trafford on an initial one-year loan deal, with United paying a significant loan fee and his exorbitant wages for the privilege, before having the option of making it permanent for upwards of £40 million next summer.

He will compete with the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney for a place in the United attack, although there are doubts about the fitness of the Dutchman and fringe striker Danny Welbeck is expected to leave, with Javier Hernandez already having joined Real Madrid today.
