The English right-back has less than a year left on his contract, and with wages reportedly as high as £110,000 per week, it seems unlikely that the Reds will be too interested in renewing his deal.

The 29-year-old started for England at this summer’s World Cup, but has been very poor this season in his two appearances.

So much so, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to celebrate the injury that kept him out of the 3-0 victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane last time out.

The defender himself though has reiterated his desire to stay at the club, despite the interest from the The Old Lady.

“There are no [contract] talks going on with the club at the moment,” he said.

“There were minor talks towards the end of the last season but nothing else.

“I’ve loved playing my football here from day one, but obviously I can only talk to the club about it when they want to speak to me.

“In January, I could (talk to other clubs), but I’ll worry about that when January comes.”

During the summer English fullbacks Ashley Cole and Micah Richards moved to Roma and Fiorentina respectively, introducing a new trend in English players moving abroad.

Serie A is played at a much lower pace than the Premier League, which could suit Johnson, who has begun to look increasingly out of his depth at Anfield.
