Man United boss Louis van Gaal will look to use Spaniard Juan Mata as bait in his ongoing pursuit of Juventus playmaker Arturo Vidal.

The Dutch manager is known to be a long term admirer of the 27 year old Chilean, dating back to his time in charge of Bayern Munich when Vidal was wowing fans in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, and having failed to lure the South American this summer van Gaal will try again in the January transfer window.

Van Gaal is ready to sacrifice former Chelsea man Mata in his bid for Vidal having not been overly impressed by the performances the 26 year old has put in thus far this term.

Vidal is seen by van Gaal as a better fit for the tactical formation he is looking to mould, with the acquisition of Angel di Maria putting even more pressure on Mata.

Man United brought in Mata last January and will be offered in part-exchange for Vidal, with the Premier League side offering around €10m (£7.9m) in addition to act as a sweetener.

Louis van Gaal is keen to put his stamp on the squad he inherited from David Moyes and has already begun something of a clear-out with Shinji Kagawa returning to Borussia Dortmund whilst Javier Hernandez and Tom Cleverley’s loan moves to Real Madrid and Aston Villa are likely to lead to permanent exits for two players that do not form part of the veteran coach’s long term plans.

Vidal has helped Juventus to three successive Serie A triumphs but could be tempted by a move to the Premier League, not least as his Turin side have struggled to make an impact in the Champions League whilst the departure of manager Antonio Conte could also prove a motivating factor.

The attacking midfielder has netted 37 goals, and provided countless assists, in 119 appearances for Juventus.
