Sami Khedira is the third name on United’s January hit-list, with the Real Madrid anchor man set to be the subject of continued interest come the turn of the year, after failing to secure a move this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, the Old Trafford boss will also investigate the possibility of re-signing World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo from Madrid, although it seems as though United fans will have to wait until at least next summer to see their former hero back in a red shirt.

The source adds that these arrivals are likely to mean the departure of Spanish international midfielder Juan Mata, who briefly became the club’s record signing when he arrived at United from Chelsea in January, in a deal worth £37.1m.

Van Gaal has already spent over £150m in his attempts to revamp United’s ailing squad, breaking the British transfer record to sign Argentine winger Angel di Maria in a deal worth close to £60m.

The Mail believes that Mata will be sold in January to accommodate a second wave of rebuilding under Van Gaal, with Atletico Madrid, Roma and Juventus all possible destinations for a player now valued at £20m.
