The 22-year-old has been making headway into the Ajax first team, having made his breakthrough in 2012, and has already gone on to collect four caps for the Dutch national side as he becomes the latest in a long line of defensive talent to come out of the club in recent years.

And CaughtOffside understands that Wenger has been keeping a close eye on the player and will test the waters with a tentative offer for his services in the new year.

Veltman was a part of Louis Van Gaal’s 23-man squad to travel to the World Cup this summer, but didn’t make a single appearance in their march to the Semi-final.

Wenger is keen to have him as backup to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertescker with the view of bringing him into the side more ahead of next season.

Ajax aren’t thought to be keen on selling, but should the Gunners exceed the asking price their resolve may well be less resistant.
