The 28-year-old has not managed to establish himself as a regular for City in recent times, and has become something of a utility man for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, filling in in a number of different positions in midfield and even defence occasionally.

Milner is now stalling on signing a new contract at the Etihad Stadium, leading to speculation that he could be allowed to leave the club on a cut-price deal this January if he does not commit his future by that time.

Roma now appear to be the main club interested in the former Aston Villa ace, with manager Rudi Garcia setting his sights on another Englishman after also bringing in former Arsenal and Chelsea star Ashley Cole on a free transfer this summer.

Milner may also be tempted to make the move abroad if it means he can get more regular first-team football, though there would also be plenty of competition for places in Roma’s midfield, with the Italians having a great number of options in that position themselves.
