The Italian moved to Liverpool for £16 million in August with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers hoping that the former Manchester City frontman would replace Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona for £75 million in July.

However, Balotelli hasn’t started well at Anfield, scoring only one goal in eight games and he was also left out of Italy’s squad for their recent Euro 2016 qualifiers.

One man who isn’t surprised by the 24-year-old’s form is Gandini, who claims the player’s time at the San Siro was a complete failure.

Gandini said: “We all felt coming to Italy, to a place where he was loved, would have been the ideal environment for him to blossom into a star player.

“But it didn’t work out for both sides.

“Mario was not the kind of player we were looking for in order to have a better team on the pitch.

“On the other hand, he probably felt the Premier League was the best stage for him to perform on and he wanted to go back there.

“So Liverpool came at just the right time. It just made everyone happy.”

Balotelli had a good goal scoring record with the Italian giants, hitting the net 26 times in 43 league appearances. Despite this, Gandini thinks the player’s form declined because he was playing up front on his own.

Gandini added: “The way Mario plays is not like a pure number nine, a centre-forward.

“Our problem at Milan was not having a forward who played in the box. But Mario was not used to doing that.”
