The 27 year old has a very reasonable €30m (£23m) release clause which could well be triggered by Jose Mourinho as he seeks to snare his former Real Madrid charge.

Jose Mourinho brought Callejon to the Bernabeu during his spell in charge of the Spanish giants and will have noted the Spaniard’s excellent displays this term.

Callejon has already netted seven Serie A goals this term and racked up 20 in his debut season, a very good tally for a player who is usually played in a wide attacking role.

With Diego Costa suffering with injury concerns and veteran Didier Drogba clearly not able to make a sustained impact a move for a further attacking option may appeal to Mourinho.

Callejon’s versatility may work in his favour and a high-profile move at this stage of his career could help the forward secure a first senior Spanish national team cap.
