Arsenal look set to step up their interest in highly-rated young Ipswich Town defender Tyrone Mings in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The Gunners have around £20m to spend on new signings this winter, with defence clearly the priority after Arsene Wenger’s side have struggled in that department for so much of the season.

Injuries have not helped Arsenal’s cause, but a worrying lack of depth in that position could now be aided by the arrival of Mings, who has also attracted strong interest from Chelsea in the last few months.

The 21-year-old looks an outstanding prospect after some superb displays in the Championship this season, and he looks a player capable of filling in at either left-back or centre-back, in what would make him a highly useful addition for Wenger’s squad.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will outbid Arsenal for the youngster, or if Jose Mourinho will turn his attention elsewhere.
