The North London side need to beat Gala to keep alive their slim chances of topping Group D, but Wenger has confirmed that Alexis will not travel to Istanbul.

Alexis, who joined Arsenal for £30m from Barcelona in the summer, has been in superb form during his first season in England.

The 25-year-old has scored 16 goals in 22 games for the Gunners in all competitions.

Unfortunately, he has began to show slight signs of fatigue, so Wenger plans to play it safe.

Wenger explained: “I will have to give him a week’s break at some stage, yes, to give him a breather. He will not go to Turkey.

“I did it with many players before who were a little bit playing every game. I did it with [Thierry] Henry, with [Robin] van Persie and it always helped them to get through without being injured.

“You have to know when to rest him and when not, but I think at the moment he plays at his peak on the edge.”
