The Merseyside club lost 3-0 at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils’ goalkeeper David De Gea was in brilliant form to keep Rodgers’ forwards from scoring. Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli were two who may well have scored had the Spaniard not put in such an inspired performance.

The Northern Irishman did admit that his side couldn’t continue the kind of defensive errors that the Manchester United forwards benefitted from in the match. They were similar to the kind of mistakes that have been costing them points all campaign.

“I thought we did enough to win the game,” he told Sky Sports. “We created enough chances to win the game but we also made defensive mistakes.”

“The first half we were the better side but we can’t concede the goals we did. We nearly went in front and they broke up the other end and got a goal, we lost a runner from midfield which you can’t do,” he added. “It’s easy, we know what the solutions are but we have to keep working and hopefully the confidence will return.”

The Anfield club’s next game is another tough one against Arsenal next Sunday. However, they will still be looking to win against a Gunners side that seems to be just coming back in to form after a shoddy start to the season.
