The 37-year-old had most recently been with MLS outfit New York Red Bulls and was fully expected to continue his career elsewhere after running down his contract with the club at the end of the regular season last month.

However, despite speculation linking him short-term moves to Arsenal and PSG, he has decided to hang up his boots.

“After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football. It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved that have made my time in the game so special,” he said.

He will now join the likes of Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher as pundits for Sky Sports after a £25m deal was struck between them.

“It is now time for a different career path and I am pleased to say that I will be returning to London and joining Sky Sports,” he added.
