Borussia Dortmund forward and major Chelsea target Marco Reus has been fined more than half a million euros for driving without a license for over three years, according to German newspaper Bild.

The 25 year old winger had been stopped by police and received speeding tickets on several occasions since 2011, but it was only recently that the authorities realised Reus had been driving without a license.

The €540,000 fine was confirmed by Dortmund’s prosecutor office to the newspaper who said it related to incidents from 2011 until March this year.

The amount is so high as the amount people pay for fines in Germany is related to monthly wages and so Reus has had to over €500,000, close to £440,000, for his offences.

“I decided back then to take that road but the reasons I did it are something I cannot really understand today,” Reus said to Bild.

“Today I know that I was too naive and that it was stupid. I have learned my lesson and this will not happen again.”

Dortmund were not immediately available for comment.
