The North London club seem to have taken heart from their performance at the home of the champions, and their 2-0 victory means that they are now thirteen points off Premier League leaders Chelsea. This is still a massive gap for them to surpass if they want to finish the campaign in first. There are only sixteen matches left to play in the competition.

“There is still a long way to go in this league,” said the Welshman. “Many teams are taking points off each other. We will just have to concentrate on our own game and hopefully go on a big run and see where that takes us at the end.

“We’ve generally done better in the second half of the season — apart from last year when we were top of the league after Christmas. We have got a lot to play for this year so hopefully now we can build on this performance. That will give us even more confidence going into the business end of the season.”

The Gunners suffered a poor start to the season, and looked like they would have a lot of work to do even if they wanted to finish in their customary fourth spot.

However, their results have improved recently and they now look well placed to make a charge for the Champions League qualification places. A chance to join the title race still seems some way off.
