The French international’s performances have recently come under scrutiny as many believe he doesn’t give 100%, although stats suggest he is doing just fine. Benzema has 11 La Liga goals in 20 games and five in five Champions League games.

Speaking in an interview with Surface magazine the striker said, “To me, to be lazy is not a defect, the only thing that matters are the goals.

“You could also reconsider the role of a striker, if you’re lazy and don’t run but make goals, there is nothing bad about that.

“I take criticism when it comes from someone who has played at a high level or who knows football.

“In these cases, I cannot say anything. But when they come from people who have never played level, I’m sorry but I don’t listen to them.”

Karim Benzema faces a lot of competition for his place at the Bernabeu, though fans and press have been critical over many of Real’s top players including Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo. Gareth Bale has been accused of underperforming this season and not justifying his astronomical pricetag, while Cristiano Ronaldo was snapped at his birthday party looking very merry the evening of their 4-0 loss against Atletico.

Despite their embarrassing loss against bitter city rivals Atletico Madrid, Los Blancos are still top of La Liga by one point as Barcelona look to overtake them.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side face Deportivo this Sunday knowing there is no more room for any slip-ups if they are to retain the league title.
