The most expensive United player ever had appeared to be finding some form before the incident, where he was given a yellow card and then pushed the official to receive another moments later.

The sending off means that he will miss their match with Tottenham on the weekend.

The 63-year-old refused to defend his player’s actions after the game, and revealed that he had spoken to the 27-year-old about the incident.

However, the Dutchman did also claim that the Red Devil won’t receive any punishment from the club for the push, saying “no, I don’t think so,” when asked about it.

Van Gaal said: “I think he’s touched the referee and that’s forbidden in every country, so he has no excuses. In Spain he knows that he doesn’t touch the referee, but that is also in his emotion. I’ve already spoken with him, he knows my opinion but also I have to see on the video. He doesn’t have to touch the referee. That is not so smart of him.”
