Ashley has long faced accusations of being too frugal from the Toon faithful, and it might offer them some crumbs of comfort that he’s finally admitted it.

“I’ve spoken to Lee Charnley (managing director) who has obviously spoken to Mike and they acknowledge the fact that we’re a little bit short. The squad needs to be stronger and they have acknowledged that to me”

“The fact that Lee and Mike have done that doesn’t make me feel better but at least the people understand out there that’s what’s happened. They’ve got to do something about it and they know that. This club will invest in the summer because it needs it.”

Newcastle only have 13 first team players available for their crucial clash with Arsenal this weekend.
