The 51-year-old believes that England’s top-flight has been hyperbolised as being much better than it actually is: “Maybe we have talked up the Premier League more than we should,” Moyes told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City were all dumped out of the Champions League, which has led to debate that the quality of the Premier League is not promising.

And the Scot bemoaned the high spending of the Premier League’s giants, and questioned whether the money spent is really delivering on the European stage.

“Of course, the top clubs in Spain spend a lot, but the other teams can’t.

“Atletico Madrid have had financial difficulties over the years but they have still reached finals. Valencia, Villarreal, they have have got quite far in the Europa League.

He added: “So maybe we do go over the top about our league. This year it is probably the poorest Premier League I’ve seen in a long time.”
