Varane may have been on the losing side, but he found the net on Thursday evening as France beat Brazil in a high-profile international friendly at the Stade de France [see vid below].

The centre-back has developed into a key man for Didier Deschamps’s France side and is surely one of the first names on the coach’s team sheet.

Despite only being 21, he defends with elegance and class and has rarely looked out of place in La Liga, where he commands a spot in the heart of Real Madrid’s defence.

The former Lens man has featured 19 times in La Liga so far this season and has also been a regular in the Champions League. He has featured in all eight of the Spanish giants’ European matches so far this term, starting all but one—the 5-1 triumph over Basel in September.

Writing on Twitter, current Lens man Valdivia has predicted that Varane will go one to become one of the best central defenders in world football.

“One of the future best in his position,” the former Lyon man began, “without any doubt!”
