Reports in the Metro suggest that the 21-year-old is among the top targets for United boss Louis van Gaal, who is desperate to further strengthen his side ahead of next season – when the Red Devils will be pursuing an improvement on this year’s top four challenge.

Even if United do hang on to fourth place – the top flight’s final Champions League spot – it will still be a disappointing campaign for the Old Trafford based side, who have failed to produce in either of the domestic cup competitions.

Cocu told reporters: “I think he is ready for the next step, and I think that he will leave. We take it into account in any case.”

According to the Metro, both Liverpool and Tottenham have also been linked with Depay, but United remain the favourites for the player’s signature, thanks in no small part to van Gaal’s time managing him as part of the Dutch national set-up.

The pair helped inspire the Netherlands to third place in last summer’s World Cup, ahead of van Gaal’s move to England.
