The Red Devils have won their last four top flight games, conceding just one goal in the process, opening up a five point gap between themselves and fifth place Liverpool in the final Champions League spot.

Last month’s 2-1 victory over the Reds at Anfield has left United players and supporters looking up the table rather than down. They are now just a point adrift of third place Arsenal – who face Liverpool on Saturday – and two points behind neighbours Manchester City.

City have only won four of their last ten league games, a run which included a shock defeat against relegation strugglers Burnley, and Mata believes that his side have the quality to overturn their neighbours for second place.

The two Manchester club’s go head-to-head next weekend, with the result likely to go a long way to determine the final league placings. Mata told reporters: “We are one point and two points from City and Arsenal and I think we can do it.

“We can even be second if we win the direct games against them.
