Former Arsenal star Charlie Nicholas has apparently urged Manchester United to take the plunge and spend the £28.9 million necessary to sign Napoli frontman Gonzalo Higauin this summer, according to the Metro.

Now working as a pundit for Sky Sports, the former Scotland international pointed out that United’s lacklustre frontline, which has been let down by the likes of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, is in the most need of reinforcing this summer.

United have been linked with a number of big names going into the transfer window, but Nicholas believes that the Argentine international should be at the top of their shopping list.

The 27-year-old has been with Italian giants Napoli since 2013, and has built on his fine first season with an impressive 26 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions so far.

That takes his total tally for the club upto 50 goals in 96 matches.

“United need another striker, somebody whose job will be just to stick the ball in the net,” Nicholas said.

“I like players who are ruthless in the box and Higauin ticks that box for me. When Arsenal missed out on him two seasons ago, I was gutted.

“He’s not a great footballer but he knows what to do when he gets the chance to score.”
