The Gunners have managed a late season charge to keep their chances of finishing second this time round alive, but they are still 13 points behind now champions Chelsea. With this large a gap between the London rivals it will surely take some serious changes over summer in order to catch up.

With this in mind the former England international has pinpointed the areas that need improving. First of all he doesn’t seem to have complete confidence in David Ospina between the sticks. The Colombian has taken over from Wojciech Szczesny since January, and has brought an air of calm to the position.

He said: “The spine of the team needs to be strengthened and that starts with a goalkeeper. Thibaut Courtois has put points on the board for Chelsea with his saves. Arsenal need the same.”

The 48-year-old also thinks that Francis Coquelin needs some back up in midfield. On loan at Charlton in just December, the 23-year-old has been a revelation for the North London club.

Keown stated: “You ideally want two good players in each position and Arsenal need another big personality in that midfield. It needs to be a proven winner with special qualities — someone who can be a real driving force — but Arsenal have got the money to find that player.”

Lastly the ex-centre-back believes that Olivier Giroud needs a fast striker partner to bring something different to the attack.

The club legend said: “He [Giroud] offers a good balance for the team so a new striker either needs to offer all that Giroud does and more or provide a different option. There is certainly space for a small, pacy goalscorer. A real fox in the box.”
