The Chile international has been vital for the Old Lady this season, helping them to win both Serie A and the Coppa Italia. The 28-year-old has also been important in their run to the Champions League final, where they face Barcelona next Saturday.

This was thought to have piqued the interest of the Gunners, who need a new player to feature alongside Francis Coquelin in the middle of the park. The 24-year-old was a revelation last season after returning from a loan period at Charlton in December, but could do with a high energy box to box player to play with.

However, Wenger seems to have made his feelings on the subject known here. Arsenal fans won’t be expecting Vidal to be turning up anytime soon.

He said: “Arturo Vidal? You [the journalist] must be from Chile! We have good midfielders and at the moment we are not looking at Arturo Vidal.”
