Manchester United are struggling to persuade Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin to move to Old Trafford this summer, with the player favouring a move to rivals Arsenal, according to the Sunday Times.
The French international has reportedly asked the Saints to be allowed to leave for a club playing in the Champions League this summer, but would rather stay in the south of England, whilst also feeling that the Gunners’ style of play could be better suited to his qualities, the Times says.
However, the report adds that Arsenal have not yet made a bid for the player, despite previous claims from the likes of the Daily Star saying that a move to the Emirates Stadium looked likely to happen this summer.
Schneiderlin is still open to a move to a United, though the Times insists the Red Devils are his second choice, which may still give Arsenal a chance to snap him up if they do decide to make an offer to Southampton.
Despite the fine form of youngster Francis Coquelin last season, it seems clear that Arsene Wenger could still do with extra bodies in midfield, with the likes of Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere looking highly unconvincing as first-choice options for the north London outfit.
The Times article adds that there could be further bad news for United in the race to sign Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, who is also described as having ‘reservations’ over the move.
