The Red Devils have agreed a deal worth around £39 million over five seasons with the 29-year-old, which works out at roughly £150,000 a week. Both the length of the contract and the financial cost are major commitments from the Red Devils, especially when considering the player turns 30 next year.

However, United are clearly in need of a centre-back, after struggling with defensive errors in the last campaign. Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, and Phil Jones were all guilty of making mistakes at the back, and the team had to rely heavily on David De Gea. They did still finish in the top four, but with an extra competition in the Champions League to play in next time round the team will need to improve in this regard.

With the goalkeeper now being heavily linked to Los Blancos, Louis van Gaal will only let the 24-year-old go to the Bernabeu if he gets the centre-back in return. This is likely to make sure that his defence doesn’t suffer without their star player, and the World Cup winner could certainly do so.
