The BVB captain has revealed that he has been well aware of interest from a number of European giants, including the Red Devils, but admits that – while flattered by the attention – he rejected the Premier League heavyweights’ interest to remain at the Westfalenstadion for one more season.

“There have always been rumours about almost every one of our players, but I decided not to make the move this year,” he began, as quoted by The Guardian.

“Of course when the big clubs are interested, and Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, it’s an honour. But I decided I wanted to stay here.”

Nonetheless, the 26-year-old’s comments suggest that his long-term future may not be with the Bundesliga outfit, and he could be set for a transfer in a year’s time.

Louis van Gaal appears to have significantly cooled his desire to land the Germany international, with reports suggesting that the former Netherlands manager is keen on pairing Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi at the Theatre of Dreams next season, the Daily Star report.

The Dutch coach already looks on the brink of making his first defensive signing of the season as Torino and Italy right-back  Matteo Darmian nears a move to Old Trafford. The full-back is set to move for a reported £12.9 million, according to the BBC, with van Gaal hoping to include the 25-year-old in the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of the United States.
