Leicester City have become the biggest story of the 2015-16 Premier League season, scoring goals at an incredible pace and claiming first place on the table as December football gets under way. They have performed so well that even Manchester United‘s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes they can win the title if the club ownership spends some money in the transfer window.
In an interview reported by the Telegraph, Fergie revealed that Leicester City are in a position to spend some money in January to give manager Claudio Ranieri a better chance of making a run at the title.
“What is the manager Claudio Ranieri saying to the owners? Because if I were him I’d want an investment in January because this is a big opportunity,” Ferguson said.
“They could win the league the way they are playing at the moment and they have goals in their team. That is not the owners’ problem. The problem for the owners is have they got the money? I think they have.
“Do they trust the coach? The problem will always lie with the coach because he has got to pick the team. Adding more players to it, he has only given himself a problem.
“At the moment, he can pick the same team because he has a limited squad and is doing very well. But if he wants to win the league, I think he should add to it. And I think there may be a great chance.”
Striker Jamie Vardy and midfielder Riyad Mahrez have taken the Premier League league by storm, with Vardy leading the league with 14 goals (including at least one in a record-setting 11 straight Premier League matches) and Mahrez tied for second in the league with 10 of his own.
In the 131-year history of Leicester City F.C., the Foxes have never finished higher than second-place in the first tier of English football – a feat they achieved just once, back in the 1928-29 season.
