Twitter SPAT: Ex-Liverpool defender is no friend of former Manchester United stopper as dispute rages

World Cup winning pair Alvaro Arbeloa and Gerard Pique have become embroiled in a war of words on social media following Real Madrid’s humiliating exit from the Copa del Rey.

Los Merengues were ejected from the Spanish Cup after fielding Russian wideman Denis Cheryshev against Cadiz. The winger was suspended for the match, having been sanctioned in the 2014-15 tournament while on loan with Villarreal.

Barcelona stalwart Pique wasted little time in rubbing Real’s humiliation back in their face when he took to social media following the ruling that confirmed that Rafael Benitez’s team would take no further part in the competition.

The former Manchester United posted a series of emoticons recoiling in laughter…a move which has not gone down well in the Spanish capital.

Arbeloa didn’t take too kindly to Pique’s comments, prompting the Barcelona centre-back to confirm that he and the ex-Liverpool right-back are not friends.

“Arbeloa said he was my friend,” Pique began, writing on social media on Saturday as per Goal, “but I don’t consider him my friend, maybe someone I know, but not my friend.”

It remains to be seen whether these two stars—among the most decorated of contemporary footballers—will be able to patch up their differences, although don’t expect any reconciliation any time soon.
