Cristiano Ronaldo scored what could be a crucial away goal for Real Madrid as they took a 1-0 lead against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night.
The two sides cancelled each other out for the most part through the opening 45 minutes, with both struggling to create too many clear-cut opportunities.
While Roma began the second half with more urgency, their resolve was broken early on as Ronaldo received the ball down the left flank from a well timed pass from Marcelo.
However, it was all about the Portuguese international thereafter, as he turned inside onto his right foot to leave Alessandro Florenzi behind before the Italian deflected the ball over the outstretched hand of Wojciech Szczesny.
It was the 12th goal in the Champions League this season for the 31-year-old, and his 89th in total as he continues to add to his impressive tally.
With Roma able to stifle their opponents for the majority of the game thus far, it remains to be seen whether or not Ronaldo’s strike opens the floodgates and allows the visitors to take a commanding result back to the Spanish capital.
In contrast, the Giallorossi will be desperate to get something from the game in order to give themselves a chance to turn things around at the Bernabeu in the second leg.
